Investors looking for protection against market downside are turning toward buffer exchange-traded funds, also known as defined-outcome ETFs. Buffer ETFs have exploded in popularity in recent years, although they are still a small slice over the overall industry. How buffer ETFs work Managers use a set of equity options when building a fund. Recently, Calamos announced a new product line of 12 ETFs that offers 100% downside protection. The first in the line, Calamos S & P 500 Structured Alt Protection ETF (CPSM) , began trading May 1.

Now some on Wall Street believe Tesla no longer deserves to be among the coveted " Magnificent 7 ," and are suggesting alternatives that could replace Elon Musk's company. "The Magnificent 7 now looks more like the Magnificent 6 as Tesla falls from the crowd," billionaire investor Leon Cooperman , CEO of the Omega Family Office, said on CNBC's " Squawk Box " Tuesday. Meanwhile, there are now 29 companies that contributed more to S & P 500 earnings than Tesla, according to Strategas Securities. The research firm identified three companies with both market cap weighting and earnings contributions (for the next 12 months) larger than Tesla — Berkshire Hathaway , Broadcom and Eli Lilly . "Berkshire spent last year fliting with the top seven, but Broadcom and Lilly have steadily gained share," Strategas said in a note.

Oil prices gain $1 on strong U.S. economic growth

Oil prices gained steam Thursday on stronger than expected U.S. economic growth, stimulus in China and falling domestic crude stockpiles. The U.S. economy grew 3.3% in the fourth quarter of 2023, soundly beating the Wall Street consensus estimate of 2%. Commercial crude oil stockpiles in the U.S. declined by 9.2 million barrels during the week ended Jan. 19, according to the Energy Information Agency. The stockpile decline is due to U.S. production taking a hit from a winter storm earlier this month, according to John Evans with PVM Oil Associates. U.S. production declined by 1 million barrels per day to 12.3 million bpd last week, according to estimates from the EIA.

Mainstream investment giants such as BlackRock (BLK.N) and Fidelity, as well as crypto-focused firms like Grayscale, have filed applications for spot bitcoin ETFs. U.S. crypto firm NYDIG estimates demand for a spot bitcoin ETF at around $30 billion. Their calculation compares the sizes of the gold and bitcoin ETFs - $210 billion versus $28.8 billion, respectively - and adjusts them for their relative volatility. BlackRock declined to comment on its pending spot bitcoin ETF, other than to confirm that it is still awaiting final SEC approval. His forecast is based on how demand evolved in smaller markets where spot bitcoin ETFs already exist, such as Canada.

Oct 27 (Reuters) - Bargain hunting drove investors to exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tracking technology companies after shares fell sharply on mixed earnings from heavyweights. The fund's price fell nearly 4% in the week, as mixed results from megacaps like Alphabet (GOOGL.O) weighed on the sector. Tech funds saw inflows of $2 billion in the week to Wednesday, their largest in eight weeks, according to BofA Global Research, which it attributed to investors "buying the dip". The $14 billion ProShares UltraPro QQQ (TQQQ.O) posted net weekly inflows of $68.15 million, even as the price of the fund fell 9.5%. The $46.5 billion Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund and the $9 billion VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH.O) posted net inflows of $205.7 million and $280.6 million, respectively, for the week.

Oct 12 (Reuters) - Simplify Asset Management plans to roll out three new exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that rely on artificial intelligence rather than human beings to select portfolio holdings, adding to a nascent sub-sector that has so far delivered underwhelming results for investors. "A large portion of the investment community remains wary of putting their money into a product that depends on algorithms," Sohn said. The largest fund in this $673.5 million slice of the $7 trillion market for U.S. ETFs is the WisdomTree U.S. AI Enhanced Value Fund (AIVL.P), with net assets of $363.4 million. "I'm not sure the technology is there yet, or that it's speaking to investors,” said Bryan Armour, an ETF analyst at Morningstar. Why now may be the time to own corporate bonds

There may be advantages to owning corporate bonds right now. JPMorgan's Bryon Lake believes his firm's Ultra-Short Income ETF (JPST) is ideal for those looking to make money outside the volatile stock market. "Some of the corporates got higher quality than the U.S. government [bonds] right now," he told CNBC's "ETF Edge" this week. Lake, JPMorgan's global head of ETF Solutions, also sees the firm's active management strategy as an advantage of owning the JPST. Strategas Securities' Todd Sohn also likes corporate bonds, citing the the monetary policy backdrop.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsSept 26 (Reuters) - Approvals on new exchange-traded funds, including bitcoin spot ETFs, could face delays if the U.S. government shuts down next month for the fourth time in a decade. "I'm not sure if ETFs that have been filed for approval can move forward with the government shutdown," said Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi. "This would just delay yet another decision on the never ending spot Bitcoin decision," said Todd Sohn, ETF and technical strategist at Strategas Securities. "People will also probably pause if they're about to launch (new ETFs) and wait for steady waters."

BOTZ has been a key beneficiary of the AI advance, garnering $594 million in inflows this year, according to FactSet. While many investors see AI as a tech play, Todd Sohn, ETF and technical strategist at Strategas Securities, believes that the benefit of industrials is an under-the-radar narrative worth taking a second glance at. And because data is what's driving AI, Maier said, larger companies like Amazon , Alphabet and Meta Platforms best retain that type of exposure. "Right now, [data] is what AI is, while we're trying to figure out where AI is going," he said. But for investors looking to diversify beyond the tech wave, Sohn affirmed that industrials are poised to benefit from the rise in AI-induced efficiency and productivity in robotics and automation companies.

Since then, Japanese equities have rallied. Even so, Strategas Securities' Chris Verrone has remained optimistic on Japanese equities, saying this week that the rally is not yet overbought. Meanwhile, JPMorgan chief market strategist Marko Kolanovic said in a note, also on Tuesday, that the rally in Japan still has "staying power." For international investors, those remarks signaled that Japanese companies may be more transparent with shareholders in the future. Investors can also take a company-specific approach, according to Diamond Hill's Mohanraj, who favors Japanese companies that boast differentiated products.

Buffer ETFs, which are encompassed by defined outcome funds, offer participation in stocks or bonds while maintaining a level of downside protection — protection usually paid for by a cap level on potential upsides. For investors easing into the defined outcome ETF space, Day said, the Innovator Defined Wealth Shield ETF (BALT) is the more conservative strategy. "Every time the market has corrected the 20% buffer, BALT has really guarded investors against losses," Day said. But to counter those concerns, Sohn explained, market volatility in recent years has created an environment tailored for buffer ETFs to prevail. Now you're seeing options-related strategies to get that income through the equity market."
New York CNN —Corporate guidance statements will be front and center as earnings season kicks off, with investors trying to gauge the economy’s temperature. Analysts forecast that first-quarter earnings for companies in the S&P 500 will fall 6.8% from the same period the previous year, according to FactSet. “We all expect earnings to be less than stellar,” says Shana Sissel, chief executive officer at Banríon Capital Management. Earnings season for banks starts on Friday with JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, BlackRock, Citigroup and PNC Financial Services slated to report before the bell. Still, earnings are just one factor driving markets, and inflation remains a key concern for the Fed.
